Black lives matter.

The murders of George Floyd, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery – and countless others – are part of a long history of anti-Black, state-sanctioned violence in the United States. This violence is woven into the fabric of our nation through structural attacks on Black, Indigenous, POC and LGBTQ members of our society. We must actively work to end it. We support and stand with protesters demanding justice. We condemn those who overlook systemic racism and anti-Black violence.

Our work

Our work continues to evolve as we continue to learn. We believe the work we do at Connection 101 can play a role in helping us better navigate the conversations we are having with ourselves and with one another. We commit to using the tools we teach at Connection 101 to actively combat racism and continue to listen and learn. With this in mind, we will:

Assume a learning stance: Connect to the strengths of curiosity, honesty, humility, bravery, love, and hope as we ask questions to learn more about the views and perspectives of others. Cultivate an awareness of how we show up given our cultural backgrounds. Deepen our understanding of racism and the practices and patterns that perpetuate inequity.

Listen first, talk second: Take an interest in what others are saying and listen to what is needed. Acknowledge the thoughts and feelings of others and learn how to speak to address injustice.

Recognize the power of the pause: Allow others and ourselves time to reflect and absorb information. Pause to absorb what we have learned, and then approach the conversation anew.

At Connection 101, we hold ourselves to a standard that accepts that the work of learning is never done and we will incorporate new learnings as our program evolves.

We were encouraged by a quote from a recent participant. She said,

“During a time when our communities are in pain and there is so much uncertainty around health and wellbeing, it was refreshing to attend a virtual workshop with facilitators and participants looking to learn more about our strengths and how to connect to build more positive relationships. Connection 101 helped me to identify and name my personal Character Strengths, Core Values, and Leadership and Communication Styles. Through conversations with other participants, meaningful activities, and thoughtful facilitation, I both learned more about myself and have actionable ideas to take into the groups where I work. Thank you!”

We move forward with these words held close and a commitment to consistently reevaluating and improving our work. We invite you to join us.
